Why Websites Need Looking After, Not Just Launching

· 3 min read · Written by Jack, founder of Mumbles Studio

A website launch feels like a finish line. The site's live, it looks good, and it's tempting to leave it exactly as it is for the next few years.

In practice, a website that never changes quietly becomes less effective over time. Not because anything's broken, but because everything around it keeps moving. Google changes how it ranks pages. Competitors update their sites. Your own business changes too: new services, new prices, new opening hours, new photos of finished work.

What drifts when nobody's looking

  • Search rankings slip as competitors' sites improve
  • Prices, hours and services go out of date until a customer points it out
  • Links break as other sites move things around
  • Domains and security certificates come up for renewal and get missed

What ongoing support actually looks like

Not a big redesign every few years, but small, regular attention: updating a price, adding a new service, fixing something that's stopped working, checking how the site is doing in search and making small SEO improvements as you go.

It's a bit like the difference between a shop that gets a fresh coat of paint every five years and one that gets swept, restocked and tidied every week. Both can look fine in a photo. Only one of them is working for you day to day.

Where to start

If your site's been left alone since it launched, that's not a crisis. It's just worth a proper look. The free SSL & Domain Expiry Checker is a good two-minute first step, and Website & SEO Support covers the regular upkeep for you.
